Dear IPC Students,
For Thursday's homework we are asking you to continue collecting visual images to work with. Take the criticism from today to guide you in collecting these images. If an image you used today was particularly compelling or you want to rework it, feel free to reprint it and add it into your assignment.
Looking forward to seeing your results,
Team IPC
Assignment 1 – Image Dissection and Influence
c07_a1
Due: Thursday, February 7th
Format: Completed in the Logbook and recorded in the index.
Collect five images that could be used to represent an aspect of your idea. Paste each image into your logbook and leave room around them so that you may write about each. In your writing, include the following for each:
- Name the literal parts of the photo (can be a list)
- What do these parts represent apart from their compositional context? (can be next to each item in list above)
- What is the message of the composition?
- Briefly describe how these parts work together/function in the composition to deliver the message you named.
- Describe at least one additional interpretation that differs from the one you described above
For guidance feel free to look at the Strategies for Discovering Influence PowerPoint in the course documents section.
Assignment 2 – Image Play in Context
c07_a2
Due: Thursday, February 7th
Format: Use tape on the back of your images that can be easily taken apart (sticky note tape) to join your image play to the contexts you choose. Bring contexts and new image play to class so that one is joined to the other.
Today we spoke about the importance of context and how it can add meaning to our juxtaposed images. Let the message you described for your group of compositions today guide these next images. This time, try to focus on one message when making your new image juxtapositions without context. After making these new images, find and develop a few contexts to put said images into. The new image and the context you put it with should allow you to more clearly communicate or explore the specific aspect of your semester's topic you develop. After putting your image play into these contexts, you will bring them to class. Each composition should include a minimum of two parts: An element that functions as a background (context) for an image juxtaposition you create.
- Make 3 more image juxtapositions without context (cut away from their backgrounds).
- Find two different contexts for each new image play piece (six in all).
Assignment 3 - Database Research Articles Close Reading
c07_a3
Due: Saturday, February 9th
Format: In the pages of your logbook with notes in the spaces around the articles
In a past assignment, we asked you to collect and read articles from Artsort, Jstore, a book, magazine article, or scholarly internet source making comments and analyzing the information in the margins using the Strategies for Discovering Influence discussed in class. We are asking you to repeat this exercise with at least three new articles furthering your research. This research should be thought of as a way to deepen your knowledge base in regard to your topic and as material to inspire your Virtual Project Exercise that is due very soon.
